New to STXBP1 Research: The Nonsense Mouse Model

The STXBP1 Foundation is working with Jackson Labs to develop a nonsense mouse model. In this blog post, we'll explore the importance of this model, how it's being created, and the valuable support from Clara Inspired that's propelling this project. You can visit Jackson Labs’ website here to learn more about their areas of expertise.

The Role of Animal Models

To gain insights into genetic disorders like STXBP1, researchers rely on precise tools to replicate the condition in a controlled environment. These tools include both animal models and in vitro (test tube experiment) models are essential for deciphering the intricacies of genetic diseases. Until recently, one critical component was missing in STXBP1 research—a mouse model that reproduces nonsense mutations.

Understanding Nonsense Mutations

Mutations are like typos in our DNA code. Nonsense mutations are one of the typos STXBP1 patients can have. In STXBP1, nonsense mutations happen in about 23% of cases, and they cause problems by stopping the creation of important proteins too early,  making them a significant focus of research.

Development of the Nonsense Mouse Model

In collaboration with Jackson Labs, the STXBP1 Foundation is working to create a specialized nonsense mouse model for STXBP1. This model will mimic the effects of nonsense mutations, providing invaluable insights into the condition and potential treatment avenues.

The Clara Inspired Contribution

The development of this mouse model comes with a price tag of $23,850—a critical investment in advancing STXBP1 research. Clara Inspired has stepped forward to provide the necessary financial support. Clara Inspired's mission is to inspire positive change in individuals' lives while directing resources toward the cure of genetic diseases. Their generous funding ensures that this vital resource will be accessible to researchers, accelerating progress in understanding and treating STXBP1. You can visit Clara Inspired’s website here to learn more about this wonderful organization.

Onward and Upward

In the dynamic world of scientific exploration, innovation and collaboration are the driving forces behind progress. The creation of a nonsense mouse model for STXBP1 exemplifies these principles, offering newfound hope for individuals and families affected by STXBP1 deletions/mutations. With the support of Clara Inspired and the expertise of Jackson Labs, we are expanding the reach of our research and for the 23% of our community with nonsense mutations, this means the world.
